According to staff working at various ticket booking offices in the city, the low figures were due to poor scheduling of the special trains. “Just before Deepavali, people travel from metros to towns and return after the festival. But the trains were scheduled the other way round,” a staffer said on condition of anonymity. The Erode-Chennai special was run on October 20, a couple of days before Deepavali and the Chennai-Coimbatore special was run on October 24. Both trains were less than 20 per cent full.
